The Zoomers are making us laugh out loud with hilarious takes on old-fashioned wisdom made modern.
Despite being a decrepit old millennial, I’m a huge appreciator of Gen Z slang, not to mention their taste in memes. The Zoomers came of age when meme culture was already well established. In fact, at a certain point in the late 2010s and into the 2020s, it started to feel like every meme had already been made. As the templates got a bit stale, we started to see a surge of absurdist memes take root. They almost lost all meaning for a while there! But Gen Z has a great eye for fresh and impactful meme creation, all while configuring an internet slang vernacular all of their own.
Much like every big meme out there, growth is organic and fast. Just think of every time you’ve heard a teen or young child, raised on a steady diet of TikToks and YouTube videos, gleefully shout “67!” at the top of their lungs.
TikTok has a language all its own. So many of you don’t know how to use “POV” properly, so first things first, let’s work on that. Next, let’s talk about how to use the word lowkey. I don’t think it’s even a bad sentence enhancer, but not everything can be lowkey. Somethings are actually high-key. Some things are just regular, or “mid” perhaps, if we’re feeling a hint of derogation about it. Saying something like, “I lowkey dislike her, but I’m always nice to her when we hang out,” is the correct use of low-key, because you’re keeping something on the down low. But when people say something like, “I lowkey want chicken nuggets,” the word lowkey doesn’t hold much meaning, because you just told me that thing. It’s not lowkey at all, it’s been spoken out loud and you’ve directly noted your desire for the tendies. I want some chicken nugs too, with honey mustard sauce, in a manner that is not low-key at all, nay, it’s high-key.
Anyway, I’m not the fun police, and I do lowkey think that almost all iterations of internet slang hold delightful interpretations. For example, the creation of the word lowkenuinely — lowkey plus genuinely — is both insane and rather useful. It has a nice ring to it!
