You know adulthood just got weird when a mother asks you to watch her adult son through a window like it’s a reality show.
Becoming an independent adult means moving out on your own, paying bills, cooking for yourself, keeping your place clean, and generally ‘having it together’. But sometimes, adulthood comes with a little unexpected supervision…
Living on your own is exciting; you’re in control of your own space, you decide what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. You’ll have to figure out plenty of things on your own, and that’s okay; it’s part of growing up and learning to solve problems as they come. Many moms try to help you by offering advice, checking in while you get used to a new routine, or just being there for you if you need anything. It’s a kind gesture, of course, because they care and want what’s best for you. But there’s a fine line between caring for someone and invading their personal life. Some moms struggle to let you handle things your way, or perhaps they worry that you won’t do them ‘the right way’, meaning, the way they believe they should be done. Mothers can worry about their sons’ well-being all they want, but never learning to let them live their own lives? That’s where things start to get absurd.
And when you think it can’t get any more absurd… believe it or not, it does. One young man found out how far a mother’s concern can go when she showed up at his door, asking him to ‘babysit’ her 30-year-old son through his kitchen window. He thought she was joking, but she had the man’s entire routine written down and was even willing to pay $20 a week to make sure her son did all his household chores, from taking out the trash to even SHOWERING. He turned her offer down, naturally. But now, when he sees her car parked outside every evening, he can’t help nervously wondering if he’s starring in her ‘watch the 30-year-old’ live surveillance sitcom.
