It sounds like the author’s mother was demanding in large part due to the fact that she had contributed funds to the wedding, and she didn’t have a partner to bring as her date. Instead, she insisted on bringing her entire new friend group, which was full of ladies that the bride and groom had only met once, if at all. 

Furthermore, the mother dared to try and bring her own food into the event because she didn’t approve of the choices her daughter and future son-in-law made. That request was most certainly a bridge too far, and as you’ll see in the reactions, most folks would have refused to let her get away with that nonsense as well.
