When your kids are little, birthday parties are really up to the parent’s interpretation. You can throw a massive party with 100 people, or you can take your child to the playground, and either way, they’ll have a blast. They’re so small, and so new to the world, that it doesn’t take much to please them.
This grandmother has her heart in the right place by trying to give her grandson a nice party, but she is certainly overstepping her son and daughter-in-law’s wishes. They have their own reasons for not wanting the party, yet Grandma is trying to foist it on them anyway.
The grandmother should compromise here. She’s only going to irritate and isolate her family members if she keeps pushing! She could easily just take her grandson out for a special birthday day all by herself, just her and her special little guy. She could take him to a restaurant, a playground, the library, a children’s museum, or even plan a play date with a friend. There are truly endless options. If she’s smart, she’ll do that, instead of antagonizing her own son and DIL.
