We don’t feel bad for Derek in this situation. He shouldn’t have access to his friend’s place like that. If there were an emergency, the author could figure out who he wants to swing by and help, but Derek clearly should not be that person.
The curious part of this story is the fact that none of the author’s friends seems to take issue with Derek’s strange behavior. We’re assuming this friend group is composed of folks who are also in their 30s, meaning they are old enough to know that this is not normal adult behavior. Perhaps the author should go and find a new friend group…
