In a shocking revelation, Ian Engelbrecht, system engineering manager at Veeam Software, has warned that AI is lowering the barrier to entry for cyber criminals, particularly in emerging markets like South Africa, which is woefully unprepared to tackle the menace.

Gone are the days of traditional ransomware attacks. AI-powered malware is the new norm, and it’s a game-changer. Cyber criminals are leveraging AI to develop more sophisticated and advanced malware strains that can evade traditional security measures.
According to Veeam’s Ransomware Trends Report 2024, ransomware remains the leading cause of IT outages and downtime, with a staggering 41% of data compromised during a cyber attack. The report also reveals that only 57% of this compromised data is expected to be recovered, leaving organizations on the brink of catastrophic data loss and negative business impacts.
The Dark Side of AI: Automated Information Gathering and Social Engineering
AI algorithms can scan networks or environments to map architecture and endpoints, spotting vulnerabilities with ease. But that’s not all – AI can also be used to automate information gathering for more targeted attacks. Cyber criminals can scrape the internet (particularly social media) to collect as much information on a target as possible for phishing and social engineering.
"AI can craft better phishing emails, bridging the language barrier that often makes such scams detectable. When combined with automated information gathering on a target, we’re looking at the next generation of social engineering," Engelbrecht warns.
