Is “Gas-Leak Cinema” dead? Ella McCay debuted at number six at the domestic box office, with $2.1 million in ticket sales. That’s across 2500 screens, putting James L. Brooks’s latest flick in the Christy zone. Not even Lisa Simpson doing the #EllaMcCayChallenge could save the film at the box office. The film also has a 22% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics calling it “An odd, messy, misjudged shambles” (Empire) but also “delightfully weird” (The Atlantic).
Ella McCay couldn’t break the glass ceiling and enter the top 5 of the Box Office. So what did? At number 1 was Zootopia 2, adding to its already $1 billion+ global box office. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 came in at number 2, with its domestic total at almost $100 million. At number 3 was Wicked: For Good with an additional $8.55 mil for its box office. Indian spy thriller Dhurandhar brought in $7.9 million at number 4. And Now You See Me: Now You Don’t is hanging on at number 5, with $2.31 million in its fifth week of release. The real magic trick is longevity at the movie theater.
