Every true LOTR fan knows the story of the stew. Unfamiliar with the most infamous culinary disasters from behind the scenes of our favorite saga? Let me be the honored fan to teach you of Eowyn’s first mistake in wooing her beloved Aragorn. Rumor has it, the caterers brought disgustingly bad soup to set the day they were filming a scene in Rohan.
In the extended editions of the movie (which is, of course, the only way to really enjoy The Lord of the Rings… Obviously), the editors left the scene where Viggo Mortensen, the actor who plays Aragorn, actively wretches at the taste of the soup. Funnily enough, this only adds to the story of LOTR and was a bit of a BTS jest for the production crew of LOTR at the time, but now remains a pivotal moment in the demise of Eowyn and Aragorn’s doomed love story. She tried her best to turn him to the side of life in Rohan, but he is the king of Gondor, and would remain so for the rest of his days with an immortal elven wife. At least she doesn’t make terrible, gag-worthy stew.
