Abandoned Dreams Revived: Biden’s $1.7 Billion Gamble on Electric Future

Biden Admin Announces $1.7 Billion Handout to Corporate Autoworkers, While Consumers Face Higher Prices and Inflated Emissions

Eleven struggling auto factories across the United States are set to receive a whopping $1.7 billion in government funding, announced by the Biden administration, to convert to electric vehicle manufacturing facilities. The announcement is just the latest example of the federal government’s blatant favoritism towards big business, while ordinary citizens face the consequences of inflationary policies and environmental degradation.

The $1.7 billion handout will allegedly create "thousands of good-paying, union manufacturing jobs", as touted by President Biden in a statement. But what does this mean in practice? It means that the government will be subsidizing the transition to electric vehicles, while consumers are expected to bear the brunt of the financial burden. Higher prices for EVs and infrastructure will be passed on to consumers, who will also pay through their taxes for the government’s indulgence of corporate interests.

It’s no surprise that the President has made EVs a centerpiece of his climate platform, given the significant interests of union autoworkers and big business in the sector. Union endorsements and campaign contributions are never far behind. Meanwhile, genuine solutions to climate change, such as truly green energy sources and sustainable transportation options, take a backseat to the interests of fat cats and union bosses.

The Republican response to this boondoggle? A promise to "hit the brakes" on Biden’s EV agenda if they win in November. But Republicans should go further and condemn this crony capitalism out of hand. The American people deserve better than a government that picks winners and losers, and funds boondoggles like the latest $1.7 billion handout.
