Breathed down the neck by pressure groups and EU regulation, Apple claims it’s giving up something it’s reluctant to—its cherished “Apple-branded experience”. And though the tech goliaths still control access, demanding hefty “associated fees” as well as committing to uphold certain standards, is it purely altruistic, or merely keeping its footprints off anyone else’s necks? Will we ever really be “free”?
