In a catastrophic display of incompetence, cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike has unleashed a faulty update that is wreaking havoc on Windows machines worldwide. Thousands of PCs and servers have been crippled, leaving businesses from airlines to banks to TV broadcasters crippled and unable to function.
The affected organizations include Australian banks, airlines, and TV broadcasters, as well as European businesses, with Ryanair, one of the largest airlines in Europe, reporting "third-party" IT issues that are impacting flight departures. The US Federal Aviation Administration has grounded all flights from Delta, United, and American Airlines due to a "communication issue," while Berlin airport is warning of travel delays due to "technical issues."
The faulty update, issued by CrowdStrike, is causing a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) issue at boot, forcing affected machines into a recovery boot loop and rendering them unable to start properly. The company has identified the issue and reverted the update, but the damage has already been done, leaving IT admins scrambling to find a solution.
In a Reddit thread, hundreds of IT admins are reporting widespread issues, with some claiming that the only way to fix the problem is to boot affected Windows machines into safe mode and delete a system file – a process that will be difficult, if not impossible, for cloud-based servers or remotely deployed laptops.
"It’s going to be a long day for IT admins worldwide," says one Reddit poster, while another claims, "Our entire company is offline." Another reports that 70 percent of their laptops are down and stuck in a boot loop.
