Getting a promotion is an exciting thing… most of the time.

If you get promoted to the role you were after, while also getting an actual raise in the process, then getting promoted is great. However, many employees find that the only thing that changes when they get a promotion is that they have a lot more work to do. Often, that work is not even in the job description or has anything to do with your previous role; it’s just an extra pile of tasks your boss decided to drop on you and present it as a reward. All while you have to accept it as a way to show gratitude for the opportunity to move up in the company.

The employee in the story below never trusted her boss, so she was prepared to stand up to him as soon as the situation called for that. That happened when she was promoted to Retail Manager, and her boss decided he wanted her to do the role of a quality control checker as well. Being roped with two roles, but with the resources and time of only one person, this employee knew she couldn’t keep this up for long. There was no way she could do the job of two people, and it was clear that some tasks had to fall between the cracks in the process.

Luckily, this employee had a few tricks up her sleeve and a plan to get her boss what he deserves. She gathered all of the evidence of her boss’s demands, documented all her tasks and everything she managed to do in a day, and sent it all to the upper management. Then, she proceeded to only do the tasks of a quality control checker and neglected the task of retail manager altogether.

It wasn’t long before the boss noticed that one of the jobs was not performed, and he decided to publicly confront the employee about it. But when she came prepared to prove that he was the one at fault, the boss immediately understood the repercussions of his actions.

Next time you get a promotion, be sure to check the fine print and ensure it doesn’t come with extra baggage. We’re not all able to pull the trick the employee in the story below managed to do.
