Yup, this is me and my coworker, Murphy. I work from home, so my coworker list is pretty much limited to my literal family (and dog), yet I still cringe whenever I hear about stories where coworkers, managers, or bosses claim the same bond. While I enjoy my coworkers and, in the past, have forged some unbreakable friendships with office mates, a workplace relationship will never carry the same weight as a family member.

Sorry, boss, but just because you call your employees in the workplace your “family” doesn’t mean you’ll fill the gap in your heart where your real relatives should reside.

Frankly, if a CEO-brained boss starts preaching, saying “We are a family” at every pizza party, prepare to be inundated with double the workload, a pathetic raise, and expect your PTO to be denied for your sister’s wedding. Because to him, your family’s monumental celebration dates are far less important than quarterly KPI’s and revenue generation.
