NIMBY stands for “not in my backyard.” It means that these people want to stop any new building development that happens to take place in their neighborhood!
But here’s the thing: pushing back against new buildings does have an impact. They need to be built somewhere. Just because a few people don’t like that, doesn’t mean the newly constructed building should just never come to fruition.
There’s so much that goes into choosing where a building should go, taking into consideration a bajillion little details. Zoning ordinances, environmental factors, the landscape itself, and on and on. Imagine you’re an architecture firm who’s found the perfect spot to place a new building, and it has room for potentially hundreds of residents to live affordably. And now, the only thing stopping you is… the people who live there already don’t want new neighbors? They want you to scrap year’s worth of work finding a suitable building spot, just because it hurts their feelings? Things just can’t work like this.
