In this instance, an employee resigned and gave plenty of notice to his manager, only for little to be done in the following weeks. Furthermore, the manager’s boss seemed to have a lot of hubris and thought he could get involved to convince the author to stay without making any meaningful offers to make his work arrangement better.

Instead, he made it mandatory for the author to come into the office three days a week during his final weeks when there was no need to do so. Talk about striking a false note tonally! That kind of stubborn behavior on the part of the manager’s boss likely only reinforced exactly why the employee felt the need to leave in the first place.

A negotiation requires both parties to make concessions regardless of who has more authority. This company refused to acknowledge this important fact during the author’s final weeks at the company. In the end, it was their loss!
