Tonight, award season has unofficially begun for independent films with the 2025 Gotham Awards in New York City. Nominations are selected by those not directly a part of the filmmaking process but knowledgeable about cinema, like journalists, critics, and festival curators. Final winners are chosen by filmmakers and artists directly associated with filmmaking. Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another leads the pack with six nominations, followed by It Was Just an Accident and No Other Choice, earning three nominations. By the middle of the show, Jafar Panahi had already won two out of his three nominations for It Was Just an Accident. But since it’s early on in award season as a whole, it’s anyone’s game for who will take home a win and kick off the first awards winner points for the Vulture Movie Fantasy League. Outside of the competitive prizing, there will be several tributes tonight to Song Sung Blue, Sinners, Jay Kelly, Frankenstein, Hedda, Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, and After the Hunt.
