This might be an easy-ish fix. After all, Mom is sort of close to her kiddos. If the 5-year-old can handle being one seat behind Mom, then the flight might still be manageable. I can’t imagine that the person in 3A, who has the window seat, would be too thrilled about trading the baby for the aisle seat, but maybe if they’re a kind soul, they’ll do it.
I think the real issue would arise if both the baby and the kindergartener cling to Mom for the whole flight. After all, flying is pretty scary even for some grown-ups, so you can’t just expect every kid to peacefully accept that they’re suddenly 40,000 feet above the earth without a little fear.
Plus, not every child is well-behaved. No shade to either Mom or the kids — you don’t really get to choose your child’s personality, and it’s not their fault, but some kids cannot sit still for any reason. They need to walk around the plane, they start singing at top volume, they can’t understand that they need to keep their arms and legs in their own seat, they whine for food… only you know how your kids will react, and you have to plan accordingly.
If anything, I feel bad for this Mom, who’s now got to deal with a 2 and 5-year-old while also managing the logistics of a flight. I’m so sorry Mama, I hope you get your man to upgrade your seats in the future so that you and your babies don’t have to deal with this hassle again.
A lot of the internet wasn’t really doling out sympathy to this father. Many of them had some very unkind criticisms! And others pondered why the airlines would be set up this way — after all, they literally do know the names and ages of every flyer — and in theory, there should be some kind of workaround that assures that no baby would be sent to a seat alone.
