According to Siya Madikane, Google SA communications manager, “A lot of consideration goes into new language additions for Google Translate… ranging from which languages to include, to the use of specific spellings.” But critics argue that this “consideration” is nothing more than a euphemism for Google’s desire to control the way languages are represented and understood.

The consequences of this linguistic dominance are far-reaching. As Google’s algorithms increasingly shape the way we communicate, what does this mean for the very survival of minority languages and cultures? Will Google’s dominance of the language market serve to erase the unique identities of marginalized communities, or will it merely serve to further entrench their subordination?

The answers to these questions are far from clear. But one thing is certain: Google’s latest update is a wake-up call to those who care about the future of language and culture. It is time to examine the power dynamics at play in this brave new world of linguistic imperialism, and to demand a more inclusive and equitable future for all languages and cultures.
