Charlie Chaplin was one of the first movie stars in history, rising to fame in the late 1910s and remaining popular for several decades. After a series of controversies and accusations of communism, he was effectively exiled from the US in 1952 and lived the rest of his life in Switzerland, where he died in 1977 at the age of 88.
