‘I’m not working for free’ Barista calls out new manager who demands they work a 4-hour unpaid “trial shift” on day 1 – FAIL Blog

This boss is telling an employee that they must not want their new job badly enough, all because they won’t work for free!

That’s quite ridiculous; you should never work for free if you can help it. Volunteering is one thing, but doing an unpaid “trial shift” at a job to see if you’re the right fit for the role is kind of crazy.

This barista was starting a new role… until the manager informed them about this “industry standard” of working a pretty long time for free. Spending 4 hours working, even at minimum wage of $15, is still missing out on $60 plus a bunch of tips. If this manager is happy to watch an employee labor for 4 hours, making hot drinks and shaking iced lattes for customers, then going home with empty pockets, it’s a huge red flag. That indicates a work environment where the boss is trying to pay as little as possible for the most amount of work they can extrude from each employee. It’s not exactly the warm welcome a new hire might hope for.

Check out this person’s story below and see if you agree with their decision to walk out the door on day one! It’ll definitely teach a lesson to that manager, who will most likely incur a hefty fine for the way she treated this barista. Some folks just like to learn the hard way!
