HOLLYWOOD IS DEAD. And as its corpse cools, the Sundance Film Festival is holding a VICIOUS WAKE, parading indie films that EXPOSE the ROT and DESPERATION at the heart of our culture. This isn’t just a festival—it’s a DISTURBING DIAGNOSIS of a society in freefall. From Natalie Portman trying to SELL A DEAD BODY at Art Basel in The Gallerist to a mountaineering doc revealing how capitalist GREED led climbers to their deaths on K2, Sundance 2024 is a gallery of our collective sickness. They’re celebrating a filmmaker’s return with a tale of ‘sex, obsession, and murder’ in the art world, while another movie forces us to watch a decade-long Syrian refugee crisis. IS THIS ENTERTAINMENT, OR ARE WE BEING PUNISHED?

The festival’s own future is a SHAMELESS metaphor: fleeing its longtime home for Colorado as the industry it birthed COLLAPSES. Yet here they are, premiering a mockumentary about ‘brat summer’ with Kylie Jenner while a film unflinchingly details the opioid hellscape of rural America. The CONTRAST is not just tone-deaf; it’s a DELIBERATE, soul-crushing experiment. They want you to gawk at the spectacle of Charli XCX’s irony-soaked fame and weep for addicts in Ohio—all in the same afternoon. This is the final stage of a broken culture: turning human suffering and artistic rebellion into CONTENT to be consumed between ads.

The most SHOCKING revelation isn’t on screen—it’s in the audience. WE are the punchline, willing to applaud a film about the ‘oldest person in the world’ while ignoring the dying world outside. Sundance 2024 holds up a mirror, and the reflection is a grotesque, grinning idiot, hungry for the next disturbing image to briefly feel something. The festival that once promised rebellion now only sells its autopsy report. Ask yourself: when the lights come up, what exactly have you paid to see?
