The festival’s own future is a SHAMELESS metaphor: fleeing its longtime home for Colorado as the industry it birthed COLLAPSES. Yet here they are, premiering a mockumentary about ‘brat summer’ with Kylie Jenner while a film unflinchingly details the opioid hellscape of rural America. The CONTRAST is not just tone-deaf; it’s a DELIBERATE, soul-crushing experiment. They want you to gawk at the spectacle of Charli XCX’s irony-soaked fame and weep for addicts in Ohio—all in the same afternoon. This is the final stage of a broken culture: turning human suffering and artistic rebellion into CONTENT to be consumed between ads.
The most SHOCKING revelation isn’t on screen—it’s in the audience. WE are the punchline, willing to applaud a film about the ‘oldest person in the world’ while ignoring the dying world outside. Sundance 2024 holds up a mirror, and the reflection is a grotesque, grinning idiot, hungry for the next disturbing image to briefly feel something.
