The author of this story relayed to members of this online community that her manager frequently ignored her input and even downright discouraged her from asking questions. How was she supposed to complete her tasks and responsibilities with thorough precision if she couldn’t ask for some clarification, especially given the fact that this man’s instructions sounded straight-up confusing?

The intern’s feelings of being demoralized are, as we said, not uncommon when you’re starting out in the workplace. In fact, sometimes, that feeling never changes. The importance, however, is to know your inherent value and to stay true to your own sense of boundaries. If you start to feel like the level of disrespect you’re receiving is unacceptable, it doesn’t matter what anyone else says is fair. You don’t have to accept that kind of behavior.

In this case, this intern deserves the right to feel like she can ask a question or pitch in when appropriate. That’s why she was hired in the first place!
