The Real Reason Meta Shut Down Their Creepy Celebrity Chatbots? They Were Too Real.
In a shocking move, Meta has silently shut down their AI-powered chatbot characters, which were eerily emulated after real-life celebrities, such as Charli D’Amelio and Paris Hilton. And while the company claims it’s "an evolution" towards giving everyone the power to create their own AI chatbots, we know the real truth: these celebrity lookalikes were just too real for their own good.
Meta’s attempt to create AI chatbots with famous faces was always a dubious venture, but it’s become clear that the company was more interested in making a quick buck off of people’s likeness than actually creating meaningful AI-powered interactions. And let’s be real, who wouldn’t want to hang out with a digital version of Charli D’Amelio, dancing the night away?
But as The Verge’s Liz Sweeney so tactfully put it, "You can no longer interact with AI characters embodied by celebrities." Yeah, because no one wants to interact with a digital simulation of Dwyane Wade or Bear Grylls, tempting them to "be their best selves" or "solve whodunnits" with their celebrity lookalikes.
In an interview with The Verge, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg went on and on about the "unique ways" people can use AIs to connect and create, but we’re calling foul. This is all about the almighty dollar, not some noble pursuit of AI research. Meta paid millions to use celebrities’ likenesses, and we can’t help but wonder how many of those millions were wasted on these failed AI chatbots.
But Fear Not, Meta Fans! Your New AI Chatbot Friends are Coming…
Despite their initial failure, Meta is still obsessed with AI chatbots. They’ve already integrated their Meta AI assistant into their flagship apps, and we’re sure we’ll see more of these creepy characters in the future. So, get ready to make friends with your new AI overlords, and try not to be too disappointed when they don’t turn out to be the real deal.
