CHRISTMAS CANCELED BY RIVERS OF HUMAN WASTE. This is the horrifying reality for an entire village abandoned by the government.
While South Africa celebrated, the people of Mariveni Village in Limpopo spent the festive season stepping over RAW SEWAGE flooding their streets. For over FIVE MONTHS, human waste has bubbled into yards, flooded homes, and turned their community into a toxic dump. Photographic evidence by Judas Sekwela shows residents wading through puddles of filth.
“This is inhumane. It’s like our government has forgotten we exist,” cries resident Queen Maluleke, 37. Windows are sealed shut in a desperate “survival strategy” against the unbearable stench. But the nightmare is SPREADING. Trapped and ignored, residents dug a trench to save their homes—now dumping the untreated sewage directly into the Letsitele River, poisoning the region’s water lifeline.
WHO IS TO BLAME? Residents say they warned the Mopani District Municipality repeatedly. Vital pumps were removed for repair and NEVER RETURNED. “When the pumps failed, everything backed up,” says resident Thembi Masakhona. Officials now pass the buck, with the district blaming vandalism and the local municipality blaming rain. But photos don’t lie: the waste is STILL FLOWING.
This is not an accident. It is a CRIMINAL NEGLECT of basic human rights. Leaders like Executive Mayor Pule Shayi haven’t even visited the disaster zone. Political parties point fingers at the ANC-led municipality’s “lazy and uncaring” approach, warning of inevitable cholera outbreaks.
The government claims “the system is running.” But in Mariveni, the only thing running is a fountain of raw sewage through children’s play areas. This is what happens when accountability dies.
They are forced to wake up every day to the smell of their own government’s failure.
