MTN’s Towering Deceit: Betrayal of Trust with IHS Uncovered

MTN’s Stranglehold on IHS Takes Center Stage as Tower Giant Tries to Break Free from Shareholder’s Grip

MTN Group, the South African telco giant, has finally agreed to resume negotiations with IHS Holding, the leading continental tower operator, after a bitter year-long standoff over governance issues. But is this a sign of a true thaw in relations, or just a tactical maneuver to tighten MTN’s stranglehold on IHS?

For those who may not be aware, MTN holds a significant 26% economic interest in IHS, and has been pushing for more power to nominate board members. IHS, on the other hand, has refused to give in to MTN’s demands, citing concerns over its autonomy and the potential for abuse of power.

But now, MTN has managed to secure a major win in the form of renewed tower leases across six African markets, worth hundreds of millions of dollars. And with commercial negotiations seemingly back on track, the door is once again open for MTN to wield its influence over IHS’s governance.

“We look forward to working constructively with IHS on the outstanding governance issues,” said MTN CEO Ralph Mupita, with a tone that some might interpret as veiled menace. But will IHS really have a seat at the table, or will MTN continue to dictate the terms of their partnership?

The tensions between MTN and IHS started simmering as far back as June last year, when an IHS annual meeting devolved into chaos over investor power. Since then, IHS has managed to reach an agreement with French shareholders Wendel, but its deal with MTN remains unresolved.

With this latest development, one thing is clear: MTN’s stranglehold on IHS shows no signs of loosening. As the two companies continue to navigate these treacherous waters, it remains to be seen whether IHS will ultimately emerge as a partner or a puppet.

[Aside: “Don’t believe the hype. This is just MTN’s latest move to control IHS.”]
