Movies often depict scenarios that could never happen in real life. We’re not just talking about time travel or people born with the ability to fly; even the most realistic and down-to-earth movies present situations that have no chance of happening to people outside of the screen.
Let us paint you a picture–you wake up to a beautiful morning in your home, the birds are singing, and the sun is shining. You walk to the kitchen to make yourself a cup of coffee, and you glance out the window to see your friendly next-door neighbor with their lawnmower, and realize they surprised you by mowing your lawn. You couldn’t be happier. Now you can step outside and enjoy the smell of your freshly-mowed lawn without actually having to do the hard work yourself. What a lovely person!
Here’s why this scenario is unlikely to happen in real life: because people value their privacy, and usually don’t appreciate it when someone invades it without asking. Add that to the fact that most people don’t actually do a good deed without getting something out of it for themselves, and you’ve got yourself a movie-like fantasy.
When a neighbor suddenly decides to mow someone else’s lawn, it’s probably because they want something out of it, even if it’s just for their own need for aesthetics. And we’re also sure that most people would not be too excited to wake up one morning and find this massive change happening to their lawn, simply because they did not know it was happening. A surprise could be nice, but it has to happen in very specific circumstances for it to actually be welcomed as it would in a movie. As mundane as a neighborly lawn mowing experience might be, it belongs to the big screen just as much as superheroes.
If the story below teaches us anything, it is that people should mind their own business. If the neighbor hadn’t decided to simply mow his neighbor’s lawn without asking, everyone would be happy right now. The best neighbors are the ones who stay on their own property and out of others’ business.
