Critics have the run of awards season right now. On December 1, the Gotham Awards gave One Battle After Another and It Was Just an Accident its highest honors, and just one day later, it’s time for the New York Film Critics Circle Awards. Made up of 47 New York–based critics, including Vulture’s Alison Willmore and Bilge Ebiri, the NYFCC individually announced each winner on social media beginning at 10 a.m. ET.
On top of securing Best Supporting Actor for Benicio Del Toro, One Battle After Another from director Paul Thomas Anderson is this year’s Best Film. In the past decade, nine of Best Film winners have gone on earn nominations for Best Picture at the Oscars (with the exception of Kelly Reichardt’s 2020 film First Cow somehow). None have gone on to win Best Picture. Will 2025 break the cycle?
