DATA SHOCK: Majority of Firms Fail to Take Seriously the Dangers of Data Disruption
In a jaw-dropping new report, Arcserve Southern Africa has revealed that over a quarter of organizations are completely powerless to prevent a data disaster. The staggering statistic was uncovered in a recent survey of IT leaders, which also revealed that a crippling 30% of data can remain unrecoverable in the event of a successful ransomware attack.
The figures are nothing short of damning, with an astonishing 80% of respondents reporting that their company has been hit with a ransomware attack, and 40% having lost data due to a breach of a SaaS application. The devastating impact of these disasters is compounded by the fact that just 31% of respondents are confident in their organization’s ability to recover within 24 hours.
The report highlights the critical importance of implementing a foolproof data resilience strategy, such as the time-tested 3-2-1-1 backup method: having three copies of data, storing backups on two different types of media, keeping one copy offsite, and ensuring one copy is immutable.
"We’re living in a world where the consequences of data disruption are as severe as ever, with operational, financial, regulatory, and reputational risks looming large," says Chris Babel, CEO at Arcserve. "It’s astonishing to think that so many companies are still flying blind, putting their very existence at risk in the face of seemingly relentless cyber attacks and data breaches."
The findings come as no surprise to Byron Horn-Botha, Business Unit Head at Arcserve Southern Africa, who laments the fact that too many firms continue to neglect their data protection responsibilities. "It’s an urgent call to action – it’s imperative that organizations take control of their data resilience or risk catastrophic consequences."
