FORGET EVERYTHING YOU KNOW ABOUT “THE OFFICE.” THIS NEW VERSION IS A CULTURAL GUT-PUNCH—AND IT’S DELIBERATELY MAKING VIEWERS SICK.

South Africa’s new adaptation, DIE KANTOOR, has just launched. It’s not selling paper. It’s selling POLONY. And it’s weaponizing the world’s most painful comedy to expose a raw, uncomfortable reality about office life THERE. This isn’t a gentle remake. It’s a BRUTAL, hyper-local mirror held up to South African society, and the reflection is deliberately CRINGE.

The series is built on a dangerous formula: take the iconic, awkward stares into the camera and inject “only in South Africa” chaos. The manager, Flip, played by award-winner Albert Pretorius, is a ticking time bomb of desperation. He calls himself “the Rassie of polony.” The shocking photo of Pretorius as Flip (Photo: Showmax) reveals the unsettling ambition in his eyes. He’s the kind of boss who would risk your life while claiming to save it.

The show’s creators promise emotional sincerity. But the REAL strategy is clear: use painful humour as a Trojan horse. They plunge into local stereotypes—from small-town gravitas to a braai as the solution to everything. The talented Ilse Oppelt and Schalk Bezuidenhout (Photos: Showmax) deliver the sharp, familiar office dynamics, but the context is a volatile MINEFIELD of local controversies.

And here’s the silent alarm NO ONE is talking about: the main cast’s demographic representation is shockingly narrow. This sets a dangerous precedent, allowing the show to claim “satirical commentary” while repeating old patterns. Who BENEFITS from this limited view? Who stays SILENT?

The show assures us the characters are just as disgusted as we are by the offensive swings. But that’s the trick. It makes you laugh through the pain, then question WHY you’re laughing. It pretends to be about the humans behind the polony sales. DON’T BELIEVE IT.

This show isn’t about building a team. It’s about exposing how desperately people will beg for recognition from the very system that grinds them down.
