A DOME OF DECAY: Inside the SHOCKING R30-MILLION “Fix” For Our Burned Parliament
They’re back under a fancy tent. While South Africa burns with crises, the political elite have just been handed a R30-million refurbished DOME to conduct their business. This is the Nieuwmeester Dome, the same structure used for Nelson Mandela’s funeral, now propped up as the temporary home of the National Assembly after the devastating 2022 parliamentary fire.
But this is NO ordinary tent. This is a monument to waste. Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson stood proudly as he handed over this windproofed, soundproofed bubble after a 10-week, multi-million rand project. He calls it “safe, dignified, and fit for purpose.” We call it a disgraceful band-aid on a gaping national wound.
LOOK AT THE COSTS. Parliament and the Department each pledged R15-million—your money—for this temporary structure. Final costs are still being “reconciled,” a classic phrase that means you will pay MORE. This dome, which couldn’t even handle Cape Town’s wind before, now has upgraded air conditioning for the comfort of 500 MPs.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER? Because it reveals the pattern. A historic parliament lies in ashes, reconstruction delayed until 2027. But our leaders prioritize their own comfort with a quick, expensive fix. Minister Macpherson even bragged the dome will be used as a CONFERENCE VENUE to “generate additional income” when MPs are on break. Your democracy, rented out for events.
They speak of “resilience” and “public good” while handing over a tent. The real fire still rages—a fire of corruption, neglect, and a ruling class insulating itself from the people it is supposed to serve.
They have secured their own house, while leaving yours in ruins.
