Beware, Redditors: Orwellian Overlords of Data Analysis Plan to Hijack Search Results
The Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, aka the Puppetmaster of Online Expression, has dropped the mother of all bombs: AI-generated search summaries are coming to a screens near you. And, as of Tuesday’s earnings call, all hell has broken loose in the realm of free speech.
This Frankenstein’s monster of AI-enabled “summaries” aims to spoon-feed you Reddit content, cherry-picked and ranked according to unknown algorithms, with Huffman proudly claiming it will “drive users deeper” into the depths of hellhole subreddits and potentially discovering new online communities. A delicious Orwellian nightmare awaits all.
Huffman didn’t fail to impress, boasting about Redditors’ data being wielded by third-party tech titans like OpenAI and Google. In reality, the once-independent Reddit forum has now become a mere playground for large tech companies to experiment with social control and mass surveillance.
Don’t get me wrong, I believe the numbers – 342.3 million weekly active users, a 57% spike in a year, and a windfall revenue of $281.2 million – are staggering. But the cost we’re paying for this growth may be the very fabric of freedom of speech.
It begins with language translation features touted by Huffman, which has propelled Reddit to “fastest growing country” status in France. But is there something more sinister lurking beneath, something that could be exploited and twisted for nefarious purposes? What dark corners of Reddit culture are waiting to be unleashed upon our innocent eyeballs?
Update (8/6/24 at 8:10 pm ET): Who actually spoke during the earnings call, might we ask?
