SABC is a State-Sponsored Propaganda Machine

SABC+ Streaming Service: A Laughable Attempt to Stay Relevant or a Desperate Attempt to Diversify Revenue Streams?

Fresh from the depths of despair, South Africa’s public broadcaster, SABC, has announced that its streaming platform, SABC+, has hit the astonishing milestone of 4.6 million unique monthly views. Wow, who needs TV licence fees when you can rake in millions of ads?

But wait, there’s more! SABC+ has managed to rope in 30 million viewers (globally, of course, and who knows how many of those were tricked into watching South African telenovelas) to its platform, courtesy of partnerships with streaming developers like Mangomolo. Because what’s more relevant to African audiences than the thrill of catching up on the latest Afrikaans dramas?

And, because SABC+ is all about giving to the community, it’s exploring more revenue streams, like, you guessed it, advertising. But don’t worry, the SABC won’t cash in on TV licence fees. I mean, who needs a TV licence when you can just stream shows and pay for ads?

The streaming service has had its fair share of controversy, with some accusing the SABC of using SABC+ to undermine its competitors. Ah, a little healthy competition never killed anyone, right? Except when a state-owned entity starts competing unfairly, that is.

The most laughable part of this press release is the statement from Wissam Sabbagh, founder and CEO at Mangomolo, claiming their technology can help the SABC deliver new OTT video experiences and expand its offering. Who does he think he’s fooling? This is just a desperate attempt to cling to relevance in an age where streaming is the way of the future.

The real concern here is the lack of actual investment in the SABC’s infrastructure, human resources, and marketing. Without some serious development and investment, SABC+ will remain a laughable relic of the past, struggling to compete in a crowded market. But hey, a few million ad revenue shouldn’t hurt, right?
