Safaricom, Kenya’s largest and most dominant telecommunications company, is screaming for help as it claims satellite internet providers like Elon Musk’s Starlink are “parasites” leeching off their networks to offer cheap and fast internet.
Starlink, which has faced regulatory challenges registering in some countries, has rolled out competitive pricing options in Kenya, allowing locals to rent hardware rather than buying it for over $350.
Safaricom, which owns a significant stake in the country, believes that satellite providers should be forced to operate as “infrastructure providers” for established mobile network operators like themselves.
In a thinly veiled attack on Starlink, Safaricom claimed in a letter to the Communications Authority that satellite providers are “inherently” a threat to Kenyan sovereignty, as their services can cross borders and interfere with established networks.
Afro-Colonial Exploitation
Kenya’s regulators and corporations are now scrambling to rein in the threat posed by these upstart satellite providers, who they believe are exploiting African resources and people for their own gain.
