“Spaza shops and smaller retail businesses often struggle to stay afloat, and Shoprite’s new digital platform will make it even harder for them to compete,” a industry insider said. “This is a clear attempt by Shoprite to squeeze out the competition and further consolidate its market dominance.”

Mark Cotton, head of business-to-business e-commerce for Shoprite, defended the move, saying: “Our new digital platform will provide customers with reliable and visible stock access and delivery services that eliminate the need to store excess inventory, frees up much needed cash flow, and gives business owners more time on the shop floor to focus on their customers and business growth.” But many will see this as just another attempt by Shoprite to exploit its position and further dominate the market.
