The age of digital transformation: How ports are struggling to keep up with the pace of change
As the world’s ports and shipping industry continues to undergo a drastic digital transformation, the success of this modernization effort depends on having the right, reliable, and layered communication networks in place. But will they be able to keep up the pace?
According to Darren Morgan, COO at Comsol Networks, "The ports are falling behind in their modernization efforts, and it’s causing delays, inefficiencies, and financial losses." With the likes of the International Maritime Organization’s mandatory ‘Maritime Single Window’ standards for sharing and exchanging vital data, ports are under pressure to step up their game.
The use of automation, analytics, and visibility across the entire environment has become crucial for every stakeholder in the supply chain. And it’s not just about avoiding congestion like last year’s severe port congestion in Durban. It’s about optimizing operations, streamlining processes, and improving customer experience.
So, what’s holding ports back? Is it the lack of investment in modern technology? The absence of expertise in digital transformation? Or is it the reliance on outdated communication networks?
Darren Morgan thinks it’s the latter. "Most ports still use traditional wireless networks or consumer-grade 5G networks, which are not suited for the diverse requirements of ports." He believes a layering approach is needed, with a combination of licensed private 5G, Wi-Fi, and fiber solutions.
But will it be enough to keep up with the demands of the industry? Will the need for real-time data and seamless connectivity be met with the current state of port infrastructure?
As the world’s ports continue to transform, one thing is clear: the need for robust, dependable, and expertly deployed communication networks will be paramount. Will they be able to keep up the pace, or will they continue to struggle with the challenges of maintaining efficient, reliable, and secure communication networks?
Only time will tell.
The controversy:
Will the need for digital transformation be met with the necessary investment in communication networks?
Will the ports be able to keep up with the pace of change?
Is the reliance on outdated technology and consumer-grade solutions the biggest obstacle to successful digital transformation?
Only time will tell.
