Wage theft in the workplace occurs more often than you’d think. This is especially true for newer employees who may not be aware of their rights or are too intimidated to speak up against their senior managers. How do you navigate the workplace when you know you are being wronged, but you are unsure about how to remedy the situation? If your direct manager is the colleague stealing from you, you go above them and talk to the big boss. If there’s only one boss, like many small businesses have, then you are in a limbo where no true answer exists aside from the Department of Labor. A small business still needs to follow the rules, believe it or not!

Sneaky, crooked individuals rely on the nervousness of new recruits to ensure their illicit, underhanded business practices continue to flourish. Oftentimes, other employees have noticed their ways and are simply too afraid of being retaliated against, or have deemed it the new normal. This is exactly why sneaky members of upper management need to be stopped in their tracks; So long as you allow illegal behavior to thrive, they will continue testing the limits of your knowledge (or lack thereof), your patience, and your fear.

The employee who shares the story below explains that they soon realized their manager was stealing their credit card tips and only allowing them to take home their cash tips. This wasn’t mentioned before the employee started in their position. Even after confronting their manager, she wouldn’t budge on her stance, so she decided to turn in her resignation as well.

Have you ever been a victim of wage theft in the workplace? Sound off in the comments below… We’d love to hear your stories and how you dealt with them. You can find the full story below. Always remember: When in doubt, Department of Labor.
