PHOTOGRAPHY SITE LOCKS USER CONTENT BEHIND PAYWALL: “YOUR PICTURES ARE FREE, BUT YOUR SUBMISSION ISN’T.”

Think your stunning sunset photo is for everyone? Think again. A popular site is now DEMANDING you PAY TO PLAY, locking the basic right to share your own work behind a subscription fee. First Thing’s “Picture of the Day” feature, showcasing shots from sunrise in KZN to the Maasai Mara, is ONLY open to paying “First Thing Subscribers.” Want to share your view? Open your wallet first.

They call it being “inclusive,” but the fine print tells a different story. They TAKE your high-resolution photos for FREE, even admitting “we don’t have money for your pics,” but CHARGE YOU for the privilege of giving them away. They get free content to fill their site. You get the “honor” of paying to donate your work.

Look at the evidence: beautiful shots from Pravesh Babulal, Carel Stassen, and others are used to lure in readers—and new payers. Who benefits? The platform, which builds its brand on your unpaid labor. Who stays silent? Every user who doesn’t see this for what it is: the CORPORATE CAPTURE of community and creativity. They’ve turned a shared gallery into a gated community where your art is just a product to exploit.

This is the new digital serfdom, and you’re uploading the proof yourself.
