Did Amazon just pull off the biggest PR stunt of the year or is The Boys really trying to gaslight us? The show’s latest episode, originally titled “Assassination Run”, has been rebranded as “Season Four Finale” with a warning claiming that the episode’s violent scenes are coincidentally similar to real-world events – a move that’s as credible as a politician’s promise.
Let’s not forget that The Boys has a history of using thinly veiled analogues for real-life figures. So, when the show’s creator claims that the similarities between their fictional world and our own are merely a coincidence, it’s hard not to read between the lines. Is Amazon afraid that their show will be used as propaganda for one side of the political aisle, or are they just trying to shift the focus away from their own complicity in perpetuating toxic masculinity and entitlement?
You can read between the lines of Amazon’s carefully crafted damage control statement below, but don’t be surprised if you’re left more suspicious than convinced.
