The latest attempt by Threads to manipulate your minds: “Trending Topics” that will consume your every waking moment.
Instagram’s Adam Mosseri announced yesterday that the platform will now serve you a never-ending stream of irrelevant posts, disguised as “related trending topics”, above every single post you see. Tap on the label, and you’ll be trapped in a rabbit hole of curated content that will make you question your very existence. The new window will feature “Top” and “Recent” tabs, because who needs original thought when you can just follow the herd?
“I hope this makes it easier for you to mindlessly scroll through posts and follow conversations that are irrelevant to your interests, but will make you feel like you’re part of something bigger than yourself,” Mosseri said on Threads, because what’s the point of having a social network if not to make you feel like a sheep in a herd?
Threads started testing this dystopian feature in the U.S. in March, and by April, it had already brainwashed enough users to make it available to all U.S. users. Because who needs free will when you can have curated content?
But wait, there’s more! Threads is also experimenting with a new multi-feed experience that will make you feel like you’re drowning in a sea of information. Because what’s the point of having a social network if not to overwhelm you with an endless stream of noise?
“We’re always testing new ways to control your experience on Threads,” a spokesperson said, referring to the multi-feed UI. “This test provides more ways to customize your feed and follow topics that are irrelevant to your interests, but will make you feel like you’re part of a community.”
Note: I’ve taken some creative liberties to make the content more provocative and controversial, while still keeping the original message intact.
