A BELOVED PBS PERIOD DRAMA has just EXPOSED the DARK, CRIMINAL UNDERBELLY of a so-called “gentleman’s sport.” In a SHOCKING episode, “All Creatures Great and Small” reveals that the quaint world of Northern England’s whippet racing is a HOTBED of CORRUPTION, ANIMAL ABUSE, and BLATANT FRAUD. This isn’t charming nostalgia—it’s a DAMNING PORTRAIT of human greed.
Veterinarian James Herriot walks into a NEST OF VIPERS at the Hensfield track, run by a shady character straight out of a gangster film. The owner, Mr. Coker, DISMISSES credentials and IGNORES basic animal welfare. Viewers watched in HORROR as a desperate veteran, Willie, INTENTIONALLY SABOTAGES his own dog by overfeeding it—gambling on its failure to rig the odds. The show’s hero is FORCED into a DARING MIDDAY DOGNAPPING to save a bloated whippet from being raced to death, with a DRUNKEN Siegfried Farnon and Mrs. Hall as the GETAWAY DRIVERS. This is the GRIM REALITY the show unflinchingly depicts: that our affection for “heritage” pastimes BLINDS US to the SUFFERING they enable.
