We are in full agreement with several members of this online community that Maya is to blame for all of this. If she refuses to accept responsibility for what she “thought” was a good idea, then the author is well within her rights to cut Maya off for the time being.
Of course, skipping the party entirely might not have been the only solution. The author could have reached out to the rest of the guest list and informed them directly that this was a total mistake. That way, she could have made sure none of her friends and coworkers would end up showing up to a birthday party where the birthday lady was absent.
We are also in agreement that there is something fishy about Maya’s relationship with the author’s ex. Sure, we do not know for certain that Maya is attracted to this guy or that they are already in cahoots with one another, as one person suggested. Still, the fact that they are in communication with one another only goes to show that something unhealthy and morally questionable to going on here. Maya is not to be trusted!
