TikTok’s New "Manage Topics" Feature: A Recipe for Social Engineering and Manipulation
In a move that has left many users concerned about the potential for algorithmic manipulation, TikTok has introduced a new "Manage Topics" feature that allows users to tailor their For You feed to show them more or less of certain topics. But is this feature a blessing or a curse?
On the surface, the feature seems harmless – users can simply adjust a slider to show more or less of a particular topic, such as sports, travel, or humor. But what about the potential for manipulation? What if TikTok’s algorithm is designed to show users more of the topics that are most likely to keep them engaged, rather than providing a truly personalized experience?
And what about the topics that are left out? Will users be forced to sift through irrelevant content in order to find something that truly resonates with them? The potential for social engineering and manipulation is staggering.
But don’t just take our word for it. Take a look at the screenshot above, which shows the "Creative arts" topic. Does it really include "painting, drawing, graphic design, and art-related tutorials"? Or is it just a way for TikTok to show users more ads for art supplies?
And what about the impact on users who don’t have the time or inclination to customize their feed? Will they be stuck with a feed that is filled with irrelevant content, simply because they didn’t take the time to adjust their settings?
The truth is, TikTok’s new "Manage Topics" feature is just the latest example of the company’s willingness to experiment with its users’ feeds in order to increase engagement and ad revenue. And while it may seem like a harmless feature on the surface, it has the potential to have far-reaching consequences for the way we interact with social media.
So, the next time you’re tempted to adjust your feed settings, remember: you may be playing right into TikTok’s hands.
