Putting all jokes aside, I really do think the boyfriend is innocent. The lighter could have fallen out while he was trimming his beard earlier, and it’s the type of object you have in a drawer for ages and don’t remember its color. The girlfriend’s exaggerated reaction and her inability to consider other explanations make me question some things, though. On the one hand, I’m left wondering whether the lighter issue is working as a catalyst for deeper insecurities she had about her boyfriend, or if it is something way more twisted. Hear me out here, I’ve heard, more than once, over the years, in many different couples, that most of the time, the one throwing a fit of jealousy is precisely the one who has a dirty conscience. I KNOW, I know it’s twisted! But I swear it’s extremely common, and sometimes it acts as an unconscious way to release the guilt the guilty partner feels (forgive the redundancy).
