North West businessman Brown Mogotsi submitted SCREENSHOTS and WhatsApp messages as evidence. In one chilling text to evidence leader Matthew Chaskalson, Mogotsi wrote: “I think you can help me.” Chaskalson’s reply? “I think so too. But you can’t mess me around.”
Mogotsi claims Chaskalson promised to “sort him out” and protect him from the commission—but ONLY if he delivered “valuable” information implicating businessman and ANC backer Suleiman Carrim. “The tone and context of these conversations caused me GRAVE CONCERN,” Mogotsi stated.
But the commission CALLED HIS BLUFF. Chaskalson fired back, accusing Mogotsi of FALSIFYING evidence by DELETING texts and calls. He labeled the allegations “fraudulent” and warned Mogotsi’s conduct could be CRIMINAL. Commissioners openly questioned why Mogotsi would offer information he couldn’t deliver, then cry bias.
So who’s lying? A businessman fearing he’ll be the fall guy, or a state investigator accused of a corrupt quid pro quo? The system has chosen its side. The judge dismissed it all, ordering Mogotsi’s evidence to be led by the very man he accuses.
