Quest for Control: Virtual Screens Come to Life

Here is the rewritten content in a provocative and controversial manner:

“Meta’s Quest headsets are about to take a huge step forward with their latest feature update – but don’t get too excited just yet. They’re basically just copying Apple’s Vision Pro, but with some… limitations. Let’s just say, Meta’s not exactly redefining the boundaries of mixed reality here.

Take, for example, the so-called ‘freedom’ to place virtual windows anywhere in your physical space. Yeah, right. In reality, they’re just moving from a limited docked layout to a slightly-less-constrained-but-still-rigid arrangement of three windows that can be scattered around your living room. Don’t expect to have multiple windows hovering around your refrigerator, TV, and kitchen island like you would with an Apple Vision Pro.

And what about multitasking? Oh boy, you thought Meta was innovative when they first introduced this feature, but it’s really just a rehashed concept that Apple was already exploring years ago. At least Apple Vision Pro allows you to truly immerse yourself in mixed reality, moving windows around freely and having them stick to their designated positions even when you take the headset off.

The dimmer feature, allegedly allowing you to lower the brightness of virtual environments while using 2D apps, is a half-baked solution that’s probably going to leave users disappointed. And don’t even get me started on the passthrough mode, which seems to be perpetually broken.

All in all, Meta’s Quest update feels like a weak attempt to catch up to Apple’s spatial computing technology. Instead of pushing the boundaries of mixed reality, they’re just trying to ape Apple’s moves with some watered-down, gimmicky features that don’t deliver. Let’s hope Meta learns from its mistakes and stops copying the competition instead of innovating on its own.”
