The fact that this all began because the author’s manager was furious at not having his phone call answered immediately speaks volumes to this man’s hot-headedness. Sometimes, your employee is not immediately unavailable, and yes, that includes when it’s on company time.Â
Sometimes, they’re in the restroom. Perhaps they’re in a meeting. Maybe they’re even trying to finish a task you told them to prioritize. Chances are, if your team member does not pick up the phone right when you call them, they will call back shortly.Â
Why go through all the trouble of feeling the need to then track your employees’ whereabouts at all times, all because of a missed phone call? That says far more about the manager’s bizarre sense of boundaries than anyone else’s.
Thankfully, this employee wasn’t having it. It sounds like he’s confident he can find a less toxic work environment soon, but as several members of this online community noted, the legality of the manager’s actions is worth dissecting as well. Even if the author is able to get away from this guy professionally, he needs to know that tracking employees at all times is a no-no.
