The popularity of these glasses has really divided people (what else is new in today’s day and age?). Some people do not want to be recorded without their knowledge, and find these glasses completely creepy. Then, on the other hand, people are wearing them, and they just don’t seem to care about what the naysayers think. They want to wear their frames and record their lives. And even though I fall in the former category, I think these glasses are about to see a huge boost in popularity.
Much like the woman in this story, I got recorded without my knowledge at a concert recently. I was dancing and having a fantastic time… until I saw a man take his glasses from his pocket and slowly hold them in a circle, capturing the room. Then he held them up like how you’d take a selfie with a phone, and that was when I realized that he was rocking some surveillance glasses! I froze in place: I didn’t realize my awkward dance moves were being forever recorded by some random guy in front of me. Then, even more horrifyingly, I realized that his 2 friends were also wearing these smart glasses. I’d been recorded for ages with zero idea. Instantly, I was having a much less fun time.
But who could blame these people wearing glasses, really? A concert is a public space, and dozens of other people were recording with their phones. And it made think about the sales pitch for these glasses, which could be something like: “Why miss a moment of your kid’s soccer game, when you can effortlessly record it on your glasses? You get to live in the moment, and you still have all your footage to cut together a cute IG video later on.” Now apply that logic to vacations, family gatherings, friend meetups, and so on.
