Nobody in the history of corporate America has ever been rewarded for paying close attention during a merger. The people who get paid are the executives who announce it, the consultants who bill by the hour to explain it, and, apparently, completely by accident, one procurement employee who stopped paying attention entirely and ordered fifty-five million dollars of inventory nobody asked for.

Corporate mergers have a kind of chaos that I could never fully grasp, just like most other elaborate business proceedings, but that’s an issue for another day.
