Calling an accidental double charge “account credit” is corporate speak for “we’ll get to it whenever it stops being annoying for us.” It’s the financial equivalent of a store telling you they don’t do refunds, only store credit, except you never even wanted to shop there and you’re never coming back. A credit is a gift for future you. There is no future you here. You’re leaving. This is basically getting handed a gift card to a restaurant that’s closing.

The real joke is the double standard in urgency. Screw up and take someone’s rent twice? No big deal, mistakes happen. Give it back? Suddenly it’s a whole ordeal involving policies, timelines, and a check that’ll show up sometime after the security deposit does its own leisurely thirty day victory lap. Funny how the system that pulls money out instantly develops the reflexes of a sloth the second it has to push money back in.

This isn’t about one clerical error. It’s about a business model that treats your bank account like a savings account they control, and treats giving your own money back like a favor instead of an obligation. Nobody’s mad that a mistake happened. People get mad when the company that caused the mistake acts like fixing it is a scheduling inconvenience, not a five minute wire transfer.

At the end of the day, a company that can debit you on autopilot has zero excuse pretending a refund needs a passport, a visa, and thirty business days to clear customs.
