Do you remember that mistake you committed in your first corporate job that made you realize that in every office there are something called “unwritten rules”? Well, today is the day to go back to the memory lane and revival that stories.
In every office, there are some rules that everyone working there knows, but they are never said aloud. The only reason you discover them is because of a mistake you commit that causes you to learn the rule. I think that everyone who works on-site in an office knows exactly what I’m talking about. Especially if they are familiar with the office kitchen. What a place, full of gossip, mixed-up lunches, and loud people. That is the main space of the office, where the real unwritten rules are. Some of them are obvious, such as not touching anybody’s food, don’t eat something you didn’t bring, and clean the utensils after you use them.
But the real fun starts when you find the not-so-obvious ones, such as the table where you can’t sit at 12 o’clock because some people of the marketing department have it “reserved”, or that the microwave can’t heat your food if the bathroom light is on. Those weird things that nobody realized when they started being like that but now everyone accepts as the truth. In the thread below they are a lot of examples of this second group, the weird, not-so-expected, unwritten rules.
I remember when I worked at my first office job, I didn’t know this was a thing. I sat where I wanted, took the salt from the shelf thinking it was communal, and used the utensils from the office kitchen without bringing ones from home. That last one may feel like normal. Well, little did I know that there was this kind of unwritten rule that some people in the office had priority over the utensils, as we were extremely low on forks, so hire-ups and managers expected new hires to bring their own utensils to have lunch. Not a good thing to find out when you took the last fork from the kitchen. But, well, to these kinds of rules, you have two ways of acting. Either you fight back, or you just comply. In my experience, complying is always better to avoid arguments when you have just been hired.
